The Middle Market Power Index: A Detailed Look at Top Industries from American Express and Dun & Bradstreet examines the four largest middle market industries to see where growth in number, revenue, and employment is strongest. Within business services, legal services has driven growth in overall number (284%), revenue (432%), and employment (471%) since 2011. These increases outpace gains among subcategories within manufacturing, wholesale trade, and retail. Additionally, this report looks at the changes in products and services offered by middle market firms over time. Younger middle market firms are increasingly operating in business services, while those newer companies in manufacturing are making very different products than their more established middle market counterparts – a shift exemplified by the changing American economy at large.
